When it comes to Comedy Central, each comedian they
have doing stand up plays a certain role in the dynamic
of the channel. Demetri Martin plays the quiet nerdy
musician with quick one-liners. Dane Cook plays the
role of crazy animated anecdote guy. Jim Gaffigan
plays awkward pale ironic man with self humiliating
jokes. Then there is Greg Giraldo. He is a Comedy
Central staple who is the go to guy for every Roast.
With clever observations of the world around him and
a dash of dark comedy, Giraldo knows how to make a
crowd laugh. On his latest DVD release Midlife Vices,
he delivers the same intense comedy kick as ever.
With a little over an hour of pure stand up, it is
hard not to be in stitches by the end. The beauty
of Giraldo’s jokes are that he enjoys setting
up a long joke with a big punch at the end, while
keeping up a smooth rhythm and he delivers time and
time again during his routine. Along with the hour
stand up, the bonus features are well worth watching.
On the bonus section you can find Greg’s very
first stand up routine on Comedy Central back in 2000
and even though this show was recorded almost a decade
ago, he his still as hilarious and sharp. Along with
this show that actually aired, the DVD also comes
with the never before seen pilot episode to Adult
Content which is surprisingly tame for a show all
about sex.
While I say it is tame, that is going by Greg Giraldo’s
standards. This DVD has no rating but I would not
recommend it to someone under the age of 15. Despite
clever humor, the amounts of dirty jokes outweigh
the rest of his material. If you are a fan of his
comedy, I would highly recommend this DVD. It is a
good laugh and a good amount of bang for your buck.
I give Midlife Vices three and a half out of five
cups of spare change. With a biting tongue and a keen
eye for a joke, it is no wonder why Comedy Central
asks him time and time again to come back and crank
out laughs.
