Review by Jennifer Pflughaupt for The Mungles on
Movies
As 300 Spartan soldiers battle it out against the
enormous Persian army, Frank Millerís graphic novel
comes to life in the most sensational movie I have
seen in a very long time. King Leonidas (a much
ripped Gerard Butler) is committed to the flawless
paradise Sparta which is threatened by the Persian
King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) who claims to be a god
and has thousands of soldiers to back him up on his
quest to conquer all of Greece. Defending freedom,
pride and unknowingly being a key to ushering in the
first democracy of the entire world, Leonidas goes
against Greeceís politicians and leads an extremely
small fraction of the Greek army (300 men) to
Thermopylae to fight Xerxes.
With only a sword, a shield, and topography to protect
them, each Spartan solider is able to annihilate a
huge portion of Xerxesí army that is full of freaks and
creatures for well over a week while awaiting the
arrival of the rest of the Greek army. No matter what
Xerxes threw at the Spartans, Leonidas was able to
outwit and out muscle them.
This is a film without a lot of character depth or
development. What you see is what you get.
However, what you see is a marvel and is well worth
the price of admission. Once I sat back and started to
take ì300î for its face value, I was on one hell of a
ride. The battle sequences are incredible and the
cinematography is groundbreaking. Violence is
rampant throughout the movie, but because of the way
it was captured on film, it was not ìmake me want to
vomitî violent.
Remember, this movie is about a gruesome war that
took place thousands of years ago. What is so
wonderful about that is that there is room for not only
interpretation, but creativity. And who better to do so
than Frank Miller? I believe he is the only one who
could realize the Spartan mission as uniquely as he
did in his novel and now in this film, ì300î. Men and
women alike will love this movie. Men, because it is a
manly-man film. Blood, guts and glory! Women, cool
love scenes coupled with rock hard abs on 300
Spartans wearing only a loin cloth, red cloak and
sandals; need I say more? Bonus: cool music to
soundtrack every scene. This is just an all around
cool flick to check out. I give it 4.5 corpse walls out of
5.
