Main Photo Most people are aware of the basic storyline of Marie Antoinette just from sitting through a boring tenth grade history class. However, you do not have to be able to recall any of that information to enjoy the movie. Instead of focusing on making the movie historically accurate, Sophia Coppola, who wrote and directed the film, decided to convey her interpretation of Marie Antoinette's life.

The film begins on the day that fourteen year old Antoinette (Kirsten Dunst) first meets Louis XVI (Jason Schartzman), who is to be her husband. It follows along through their marriage and the awkward months that follow in which their marriage remains unconsummated, and shows how Antoinette adjusts to life in France without anything from her Austrian childhood.

Pic 1 One part of this film that I really enjoyed was how the characters were portrayed in the beginning. They were both teenagers, they had fun doing things that teenagers do, such as playing with their puppy and sword-fighting in a field with their friends. The viewer knows that they are young when this adult life is thrust upon them and I think that adds a lot to the movie. Plus, a little something for the female audience members: the clothes. They are magnificent. I'm sure that the layers of heavy material and hair that could very well be the size of a New York skyscraper were extremely uncomfortable, yet I still couldn't help wishing that I lived in that time period just so I could justify wearing one of the many dresses Antoinette and her friends wore daily.

Cusack / Lane Let's not forget the imagery and color that explode off the screen. That's enough reason right there to go out and spend the eight dollars to see this movie. Every shot is filled with beautiful things to feast on with your eyes. Whether it's the architecture of the castles, the landscape, or just the colors of the walls in a particular room. They are all pleasing to the eye.

One fault I did find in the movie however was that some of the scenes were quite repetitive. Many of the events that occur in a King and Queen's life are traditions that must be repeated over and over again. Plus, Marie Antoinette liked to throw parties that generally consisted of drinking and gambling. After two hours, it got a little old. For this reason, I give Marie Antoinette 4 out of 5
