Review by guest writer Stephanie Stephens. Check
out her bio below.
The first thing that needs to be said about the
movie Blood and Chocolate is this; If you are a fan
of the book, do not go into this movie expecting it
to be the same, because it simply isnít. The only
thing that remains the same are the characters names
and the fact that they are werewolves. Now, onto the
review.
Blood and Chocolate is your typical love story. Boy
meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, boy finds
out girl is really a werewolf and must now come to
blows with her entire pack. Okay, maybe itís not so
typical.
The story revolves around Vivian (Agnes Bruckner), a
girl that has been living with her Aunt Astrid
(Katja Riemann) in Romania for most of her life due
to a tragic circumstance that occurred when she was
still just a child living in the United States,
leaving her an orphan Every seven years the leader
of the loup-garoux, or werewolves, must pick a new
mate and Vivian is next on the list. Until she meets
and falls in love with Aiden, played by Hugh Dancy,
a nice American guy that just so happens to be
working on a graphic novel about werewolves.
However, they can never truly be together,
especially in the eyes of the pack led by Gabriel
(Olivier Martinez).
While the acting is believable, the special effects
in this film were severely lacking. This came as a
big surprise to me seeing as how it is from the
producers of Underworld which is almost overflowing
with special effects. Many of the scenes surrounding
ěthe fiveî, a group of rebellious boys led by
Gabrielís son Rafe (Bryan Dick), involve a lot of
jumping from building to building a they chase
around humans to have a little fun. However, instead
of actually showing the action of the jump occur,
the film instead shows a shadow flying overhead, or
a blurry object that you canít really make out.
Also, in most werewolf movies, there is the pivotal
scene where the audience finally sees the humans
morph into wolves, but unfortunately for this movie,
itís just not portrayed as fantastically as the
films predecessors.
Overall, the storyline, when taken in context and
not comparing it to the book was an okay plot and
the acting was believable for the most part. But I
still canít bring myself to rate it any higher than
a 2.5 out of 5.
