Review by Jennifer Pflughaupt for The Mungles on
Movies
ìBlack Snake Moanî starring some of Hollywoodís
most well known faces such as Christina Ricci and
Samuel L. Jackson, is an extremely sexually charged
film with an introspective look at some of the most
broken people to walk to dirt roads of the South. Rae
(Ricci) is known as the town floozy who is deeply
afflicted with her ìsicknessî; Lazarus (Jackson) is an
alcoholic, Blues guitar player who just canít get a hold
of his life. When Rae has a night of debauchery after
her boyfriend (played by up and comer, but no
stranger, Justin Timberlake) ships out for the war,
she gets herself into trouble and is left for dead on the
dirt road leading to Lazarusí mailbox where he later
discovers her barren, half-naked body.
This is when the story seemed to turn from ridiculous
sex smut into interesting, funny, sweet, sexy and
redeeming. While nursing Rae back to health,
Lazarus discovers some very dark things about her
reputation and decides that while he is on his own
quest to make himself convalescent, he is going to
make Rae ìrightî, chains her to the house and the
story travels on an unconventional path to self-
redemption from there. When I saw the trailer to this
film, I was a little worried. The movie looked like it
was either going to be incredibly bad or just plain
incredible. Thank goodness it was the latter.
This is not a film for the usual, general audience
frequenting the local theater. This is for the avid movie
spectator that enjoys a good intrigue that is critical in
examining a story and its characters. As I sat in the
public screening, many were laughing at
inappropriate parts. Had they really been paying
attention and understanding the depth to which the
film explores, they would have understood that those
parts are not humorous at all but, that they are an
exterior to what lies beneath in the character and how
serious and heavy it truly is. Be warned, this film is
rated R for strong sexual content, language, some
violence and drug use. If sex in any way offends you, I
would not suggest seeing this film. However, if you
can appreciate brokenness and redemption, this is an
excellent choice.
