"December Boys" is a heartwarming new drama
starring only one true familiar face to American
cinema, Daniel Radcliffe. Yes, that's right girls and
boys. Harry Potter is all grown up and has put down
the Nimbus 2000 to sweep us off his feet using a
more practical magic, love and sincerity. Set in the
late 1960s, this endearing flick is one that takes us
back to the most basic of ideals, brotherly love. Maps,
Misty, Sparks and Spit are all orphans at a Catholic
school in the outback of Australia where the sun is
hot, the air is dry and there is nothing around for miles
on end. The "December Boys", as the nuns call them
because they all have birthdays in December, have a
strong loyalty to one another and are dedicated to the
brotherhood formed under the unfortunate
circumstance they have all been put in. Finally, the
school receives some extra cash and the boys get to
go on holiday to the beach and from that point
on, "December Boys" take us on an extraordinary
adventure of self-discovery and enchantment.
"December Boys" is a brilliantly adapted screenplay
written by Marc Rosenberg, who is known for his work
that takes place primarily in Australia. This film
showcases the simplistic beauty of the country and
coast all rolled into one story. It could be compared to
watching a traversing postcard. Seeing this film made
me want to grow up in the 1960s instead of the 80s. I
feel like I missed out on a less complicated
childhood. Everything is so fast paced now with
technology in all facets that I long for a dawdling life
that always seems to be portrayed in cinema
concerning this era. I always hear from my
parents "back then was so much more different and
simple."
"December Boys" captures the very
essence of that affection I hear in my mother and
father's voice when they say those things and I feel
lucky to have experienced the 60s the way I did in this
movie, even if it was just for 105 minutes.
As for the acting in the film, I was surprisingly
impressed with Daniel Radcliffe and the rest of the
December boys. Each played their roles perfectly and
I felt like I was peaking in on someone's life instead of
watching a movie. The supporting cast was incredible
and even better, believable. There are some heavy
handed undertones and themes with serious issues
being dealt with in the movie; however, the story is so
graceful and dignified that I was touched instead of
uncomfortable. I am happy to give "December Boys" 5
out of 5 cart-wheeling nuns.
