Review by Anne Jackson
Have you ever wondered what happens in your local
bulk foods retailer after the glaring lights dim and the
motion-sensor doors magically lock? If you’re like
most people, you probably haven’t. However, I
wonder where little-known director Greg Coolidge
was when he had the epiphany to go where no movie
has gone before: behind the scenes at a bulk foods
retailer.
If you thought it’s a dog-eat-dog world in the land of
skyscrapers and suits, you’ve yet to realize the
rivalry that exists in the hierarchy of the kingdom of
bulk goods. Dane Cook plays box boy Zack Bradley, a
charming yet unmotivated employee at Super Club.
His arch-nemesis, Vince Downey (Dax Shepherd) is
the lead cashier on Register #1 – and has also
earned the esteemed award of Employee of the
Month for seventeen months straight. One more
month, and Vince wins a “new-ish” 2005 Chevy
Malibu.
Enter new girl Amy Renfro (Jessica Simpson). And
enter the lowest V-neck shirts you have ever seen –
or will see – in your life. With her cutesy personality
and, well, other things, bubbling over, she quickly
becomes the highly-sought after prize of both Zack
and Vince. And rumor has it that the only thing that
turns this girl on is the Employee of the Month.
It’s amazing what cleavage will do to inspire a man.
Soon, the lazy Zack begins waking up early and going
the extra mile for some ego-stroking from Amy and
upper-management. And as the month is drawing to
a close, we’re left guessing until the very end just
who the Employee of the Month will be.
I was actually surprised that I laughed consistently
through this movie. It was genuinely funny, and the
characters were extremely diverse and likeable.
Although some of the camera work was sloppy and
out of focus, it was easy to forgive. Andy Dick, Tim
Bagley, Brian George, and Harland Williams make a
great supporting cast. On the downside, Glen Gary
(Tim Bagley) was a little too much like Steve Carrell
from The Office for my liking, and Jessica Simpson
was only in the cast for one, no two, very obvious
reasons. But overall, I left wanting to sneak into the
Costco down the road to see if this stuff really
happens.
Employee of the Month is rated PG-13 for crude and
sexual humor, and language. I give it 3.5 out of 5
dented coke cans.
