Review - Kathryn Ryan for The Mungles on Movies

Fast cars, pretty women, lots of chase scenes, and intense fight sequences, is there any way for a film to go wrong? This combo would have a whole demographic of guys who can pick which aspect is their favorite. Oh, and let us not forget, the original cast is in this movie, so everything about this film will be foolproof right? A great experience for everyone? I am sad to report, not so much. But before we dig right in, let us take a minute to go through what exactly Fast & Furious is about.
Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) has been running from the law for years, going everywhere from Barcelona to Santa Barbara, but that hasn't stopped him from making a little cash along the way. When Toretto receives word about a crime involving a woman he loves in Los Angeles, he rushes back to seek revenge. He finds out that in order to seek the justice he wants, Toretto must work with former "friend" Brian O'Connor (Paul Walker) who was an undercover cop a few years back that tried to arrest him. Can these two men put aside their past animosity to avenge a death and take down one of the biggest drug cartel leaders?
This was one of those films where the directors thought the cars would carry the movie. Yes, I know it is a movie all about cars, but with the intense amount of focus on them around every corner, it leaves no room for characters to develop relationships. In saying that, the actors aren't allowed to blame the cars for their poor acting. Vin Diesel pulls off the "tough guy" look, but looks are pretty much all he and his cast mates are good for. The characters seem distant from each other, making it hard to connect with what is going on. The plot was mediocre, it felt like the writers could have done a lot more with this movie and taken the story a little bit further.
This movie is rated PG-13 for the sequences of violence and action, some sexual content, language and drug references. All of the reasons this movie got the PG-13 rating fit and are needed to move the "story", except for sexual content. Crazy club scenes with girls in miniskirts making out with one another are just thrown in there. Though boys younger than 13 will want to see this for the cars, the sexual content might be reason enough to keep them from watching it until they are older.
I give Fast & Furious 1 and a half out of 5 blown out tires. Though this little souped-up movie tries to keep up with its prequels, it falls laps behind and should consider never racing again.
