Review - Jennifer Pflughaupt for the Mungles on Movies
Honesty:
(noun) 1. "the quality or fact of being honest; uprightness and fairness". 2.
"truthfulness, sincerity, or frankness".
Brutal:
(adjective) "harsh; ferocious:
brutal
criticism".
These definitions will be a reminder to why I am about to
give "Gentleman Broncos" the absolute worst movie review I have ever awarded
any film. I will save you from the
effort of scrolling down your screen to find out how many stars I give this
movie. "Gentleman Broncos" is in debt a
couple of stars. They owe ME a star or
two just for making it through the entire film without walking out of the
theater. They have negative stars.
"Gentleman Broncos" written by Jared and Jerusha Hess, the
creators of such cult classics as "Napoleon Dynamite" and "Nacho Libre" came up
with a ninety minute long uncomfortable moment. Benjamin, played by the talented Michael
Angarano ("Lords of Dogtown") is an aspiring playwright in Utah. He goes through trouble and tribulation as a
failing author, Chevalier, played by Jermaine Clement ("The Flight of the
Conchords") uses a youth writing contest to find his next big hit and plagiarizes
Benjamin's work which becomes a huge success.
Along the way Benjamin's widowed mother, Judith, portrayed by the
fabulously funny Jennifer Coolidge ("Best in Show", "Legally Blonde") struggles
to find her place in the world and continually fights to support her son as he pursues
his dreams. Sounds like a decent plot
with the potential to be a great movie, right?
Making a point here, stick with me people. Ready?
Here it is: good writing equals good movie. Bad writing equals eight wasted bucks and
ninety wasted minutes of your life neither of which you will ever get back.
I truly believe as I watched this flick the actors did
exactly what they were told. They did a
decent job with the material they were given.
What possessed them to want to do this movie in the first place will
always be a mystery to me. However, they
did well. The plot sounded good, but maybe I just don't get it. I like art films. I like independent films. I like all kinds of films, which is why I am
so frustrated with this film. I really
do try to find the good in every movie, but there just is NOTHING worth noting
in this film. "Gentleman Broncos" looked
as though a middle school student did it as a creative writing project and
filmed it with anything he could recycle from the 80's.
I fault Hollywood with even giving this script the time of
day when there are so many other talented and gifted writers out there with the
possibility of sharing greatness and we get this awkward mess that is
"Gentlemen Broncos". My responsibility
to you the reader is to make an opinion about a film and steer you in the right
direction where you will be thankful you listened to my suggestion as you leave
a theater. In good conscience not only
can I not suggest this movie, but I cannot even say anything positive at
ALL. Sorry Jared and Jerusha...you're 15
minutes is up.
