Review by guest writer Stephanie Stephens. Check
out her bio below.
The only thing I knew about the movie Haven,
written and directed by Frank E. Flowers, as I walked
into the theatre was that it starred Orlando Bloom.
While thinking about Bloom my mind automatically
remembers his work in movies such as Elizabethtown
and Pirates of the Caribbean, both of which make
you laugh, smile, and just have a good time. Haven is
something quite different.
The movie starts with two business men (played by
Bill Paxton and Stephen Dillane) who flee to the
Cayman Islands to escape the police and some major
jail time. On the island, Shy (Bloom) has fallen in love
with Andrea (played by the lovely Zoe Saldana), the
daughter of his boss. She has just legally become a
woman and that first night changes everything. Her
loss of innocence leads the rest of the people around
her into a downward spiral of hate and violence,
which inevitably results in a crime that affects the
entire nation.
What distracted me the most about this film is how it
was filmed. The actors did a wonderful job, but at
times I felt that the camera’s quick movements and
loss of focus distracted from the scenes. I spent a
majority of the movie trying to decide if it added to
the ambiance of the island or just caused me to have
a headache and feel dizzy. Also, while walking out of
the theatre I heard many people muttering questions
to one another, trying to figure everything out. It
gets a little confusing at times, almost as if you’re
watching two films at once; as though they had an
idea for a movie but didn’t have enough materials so
they added a new story line and wove them
together. Due to this, I am giving Haven a rating of 3
out of 5.
Haven is rated R for language, drug use, sexual
content, and some violence. It is not a movie you
would want to bring your younger siblings to watch.
If you are offended by the big “F” bomb, you will
more than likely not enjoy this movie as it is said at
least once in every other scene.
