Fate. Karma. Luck. Divine intervention. We all have
our own name for those moments in life when things
just go our way. When it seems we can do no wrong.
The powers behind the new teen comedy starring
Lindsey Lohan will more than likely be feeling all that
and more at the box office.
Just my Luck is just what the teen populace needs to
kick off their summer. Ashley (Lohan) is the queen of
good fortune. She always has been. Her very
presence causes rain and NY cabbies to stop
whenever she needs them to. In the first few minutes
of this film you get the idea that this could very well
be the luckiest woman on the planet. To keep things
in balance we are introduced to Jake (Chris Pine). A
wanna-be music executive with a heart of gold and a
dark cloud following his every move. To the extreme
that Ashley is providential, Jake is just as ill omened.
When they share a random, unplanned kiss, their
fortunes are swapped.
This film has all the elements of a perfect romantic,
teen comedy. The Lohan factor plus cute guys and
pop music is a definite recipe for success. Forget
that this film is unbelievable and at times campy and
ridiculous. It works where it needs to. One place it
shines is in the casting of an actual band (McFly) to
play the alterna-pop act in the film. What a relief
that was. I would much rather see real musicians try
to act than to suffer through actors trying to be
musicians. Again, the music is a big part of the film
and another reason that this will be a popular teen
hit.
I do feel that they could have done a better job
making the point of how luck influences your
decisions and how it affects the outlook of
individuals. At times they would briefly bring up the
subject of finding the best in every situation and the
fact that life is filled with good and bad breaks. But
mainly it went the light handed comedy route and left
the message as an afterthought. Also they mixed in
every object of fortune telling and superstition under
the sun. From horoscopes, and tarot cards to black
cats and broken mirrors. It treats each the same and
neither shines a good nor bad light on any of them.
Just My Luck is Rated PG-13 for brief sexual
references. I was surprised at its 13 level. I think
the language, though salty at times, was no worse or
often as what you hear on any prime time sitcom and
the sexual moments are very brief and only
suggestive. It could be that the romantic elements
and life issues would bore those under 13. On the
whole I think most teenagers will find this right up
their cinematic alley. Still I only give it 3 out of 5
kisses. It was disappointing in a lot of ways with thin
writing and common acting plus it relied too heavy on
its teenaged leading actress. And this time Herbie
wasn't there to help her along. With a look at Just My
Luck, I'm Matt Mungle.
