Christmas is upon us and the silver screen is
lighting up with all kinds of holiday delights.
But, what is Christmas really? Is it Olí Saint Nick
with his belly like a bowl full of jelly; or, is it
something more tangible than that? Pagan rituals
such as Santa Claus can teach us a thing or two,
Christian and non-Christian alike. We are all
taught to believe in Santa as children, even though
it pains us as kids to do so because we can never
see him or meet him. We just have to believe, be
good throughout the year and then we reap the
rewards with presents under the tree. Isnít it
amazing how that plays into the Christian faith as
well? Santa is like Christ. We believe in Him, we
do what is right and good in His eyes and we reap
the rewards. There is just one difference. We CAN
see Him and meet Him. We can even take it a step
further and have a relationship with Him. ěThe
Nativity Storyî finally explains the beginning of
what the Christian faith is all about ‚ the birth of
Christ.
Even though that is the climax of the movie and what
we wait for, the story is about the journey of Mary
and Joseph getting to the manger on that long
awaited night. God never fails us. He does
everything with perfection and this is finally
presented flawlessly in the film. Thanks to Mel
Gibson and ěThe Passion of the Christî paving the
way, the Christian community in Hollywood has found
that they can make good, quality films showcasing
some of the most interesting stories in history.
We donít know the intricate details of Mary and
Joseph and what they went through when they found
out that they were going to be the parents of the
worldís savior and more importantly, GODíS SON!
First of all, how did they become husband and wife?
Did they love each other? What went on with the
couple during this tumultuous time especially with a
paranoid, absolutist for a ruler? How did they deal
with the news of becoming Jesusí parents? What is
their story? ěThe Nativity Storyî, directed by
Texasí own Catherine Hardwick, shows an honest and
somewhat creative look at how Mary and Joseph may
have done things. It is based on not only Biblical,
but also astronomical and historically documented
facts. Explanation of the wise men, the star of
Bethlehem and other mysteries are finally presented.
The iconic figures sporadically spoken of in the
Bible are humanized and beautifully illustrated, and
the actors do a superb job bringing them to life. I
give ěThe Nativity Storyî 4 and 1ű2 stars out of 5.
