New in Town

Review - Kathryn Ryan for The Mungles on Movies

Everyone has those relatives who live up North, it seems whenever you go to see them, it's usually the coldest time of year to do so. You pack all of your warmest clothes, but being from the South, it is definitely not enough. Your family gives you a hard time about not being able to take the cold, but you live through it. It's only for a week right? Well in the movie, New In Town, it is a little bit different.

The story revolves around Lucy Hill (RenČe Zellweger), an executive businesswoman from Miami who is asked to oversee the downsizing and modernization of a small cheese factory. What she doesn't know is that it is set in the middle of nowhere Minnesota and she is required to move there. She must leave the sunny palm trees of Florida for the blistering cold winds of Minnesota. She is given the cold shoulder when she first arrives, but makes friends with her secretary, Blanche Gunderson (Siobhan Fallon), the scrapbook fanatic and the rough-around-the-edges handsome man, Ted Mitchell (Harry Connick Jr). Lucy, once she grows close to the community, tries everything she can to save the factory from being completely shut down. Can she do it?

The supporting cast for this movie was chosen excellently. Siobhan Fallon does a remarkable and memorable job playing the stereotypical Minnesota Gal. The leads in the movie were outshined in this one. Even though everyone had their funny moments, you walk away remembering the supporting cast. The jokes in the movie are laugh-out-loud funny and original. Though the humor was not predictable, the plot was. There are no surprises in this movie. It is quite easy to predict what will happen next because you have probably seen it in another movie. This is not saying that the movie isn't good; it is just a movie that has very little depth to it. With saying that, New In Town leaves the audience feeling happy by the time the credits roll. The film does an excellent job of tying up all loose ends.

If you know anyone from up north who is a diehard Vikings fan, then see this movie and you will get quite a kick out of it. If you want a movie that is full of originality plot-wise, you might want to skip it. This is the kind of movie that is great for laughs, but not for much else. This is a film that women will see and enjoy.

I give New In Town two and a half out of five scrapbooks. Being up north is fun for a little while, but its nice to come back down to the "oh so warm" south.
