Review by Anne Jackson
Spending a night at the museum probably isnít at the
top of anyoneís to-do lists. But what if you knew
youíd be playing fetch with a T-Rex, running from
Attila the Hun, or playing with pint-size cowboys?
Ben Stiller plays Larry Daley, your stereotypical
unemployed divorced father. Threatened by his
ex-wife and her fiancÈe never to see his son again.
Desperate to earn his sonís trust and affection
back, and to avoid being evicted from his apartment,
he gets a job as a night security guard at the
Museum of Natural History.
After wandering around the deserted museum, Larry
notices the T-Rex feature is no longer on its stand,
but running around the museum; and not only that, the
entire museum is under the spell of a magical
Egyptian tablet ‚ meaning everything comes to life
at night.
Left to fend for himself with only the vague
instructions from the former security guard (Dick
Van Dyke) he attempts to follow the rules to the
letter. However, the myriad of characters
(Neanderthals, cowboys, Sacajawea, Attila the Hun,
Roman warriors, lions, tigers and monkeys; you get
the point) proves to be too much for Larry.
Coming to rescue is Robin Williams, who plays Teddy
Roosevelt. Williams, who helps Larry manage the
issues he has with the diverse characters, lights up
the screen in this role. Yet even with Teddyís
help, Larry continues to doubt his potential.
However, when the magic tablet goes missing, Larry
sees the chance to redeem himself in his sonís eyes
as well as find his own value and purpose in life.
There are several well-known cast members including
the 86-year-old Mickey Rooney and Owen Wilson. And
although as a whole, the movie was fairly choppy
between scenes, the acting was sub-par, and some of
the plot contradictory, overall this movie was
incredibly amusing as a family film. Itís not too
scary for young children and is pretty clean. The
special effects are fun and characters are charming.
I give it a 3.5 out of 5 evil monkeys.
