April
22nd is Earth Day and to celebrate, DisneyNature
released a new ecological documentary to
show the wonders of the Oceans. Filmed from
pole to pole with voice narration by Pierce
Brosnan, Oceans is an intriguing and at
times otherworldly adventure into the life,
power and vastness of the deep blue. As
director Jacques Cluzaud puts it, "Oceans
allows the audience to be a part of Marine
life. We took the time to allow the animals
to invite us in. We waited to become a fish
among fish."
The pace of the film might be too slow for
some. There is very little in the way of
highs and lows. Like an otter lounging in
the afternoon sun, Oceans is in no hurry
to get from point to point. Instead it dreamily
moves through each scene with beautiful
waves of imagery. Though breathtaking to
see it brings little in the way of excitement.
So if you are expecting jungle type nature
scenes underwater you need to instead sit
back and prepare for a slower encounter.
What this film does bring is every type
of fish imaginable. We sometimes forget
how creative the creator is when it comes
to shape, size and color. Oceans contains
never-before-seen footage captured by the
latest underwater technologies. This allows
you to see the animals in a way that is
undisturbed. The film makers have a way
of blending in so that the fish live their
lives as if nothing is out of place.
Oceans is rate G and informative for the
whole family. Though there are times when
the food chain is shown in graphic detail
it is not done for shock value and they
move on without over stating the obvious.
I doubt your little ones will walk away
traumatized and will soon forget it once
they see the funny otters. Whether a fan
of the sea or not, you will learn something
about the world we many times take for granted.
It gets 3 out of 5 crab shells. Though slow
and over narrated; its beauty, wonder and
excitement will pull you away from this
hectic world for a short while and allow
you to rest in the grace of mother natures
waters.
