Review by Jennifer Pflughaupt for The Mungles on
Movies
Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan are back for the third,
and hopefully FINAL, installment of "Rush Hour 3". It
seems like the duo were searching for the same kind
of luck other trequels have had this summer such
as "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" and "Live
Free or Die Hard"; however, this film was totally and
irrefutably mindless. I will never get those precious
ninety minutes back in my life and I honestly felt a little
bit dumber after leaving the movie theater. (Maybe that
would be a good excuse to my College Algebra
professor? "Hey Dr. Grether, don't blame me. It was
Rush Hour 3!" Probably not.) Actually, I wasn't
expecting much knowing how "Rush Hour 2" was on a
steep decline in quality from the original. Let's break it
down, shall we?
The acting: first, Chris Tucker as Detective James
Carter. Kudos to Mr. Tucker for (what is rumored)
scaling back on his acting jobs due to content. I can
appreciate wanting to be entertaining, comedic and
clean all at the same time. That is a wonderful thing.
But, when he receives his first notable appearance as
Ice Cube's hilariously high friend named Smokey in
the 1995 hit "Friday", that is a hard image to shake off.
There are many comedians attempting to break free
from the mold of asinine comedy, such as the
infamous Robin Williams, Jim Carrey and Will Smith.
So maybe, Mr. Tucker, you should try drama, because
your jokes are erroneous and tired. Second, Jackie
Chan as Chief Inspector Lee. Why is this man an
actor? He should be a stunt man and that's it. He can
kick, flail about, karate chop a car in half, but he
CANNOT act. Moving on.
The Writing: "Rush Hour 3" written by Jeff Nathanson
and Ross LaManna. It took 2 whole people to write
this? Really??? The story was completely unoriginal
and boring. Just look at any action/cop/mystery flick
and take a piece here and piece there and you
have "Rush Hour 3". Their actual script is probably
about 3 pages long. It is totally unoriginal and boring.
The Rest of the Movie: Directed by Brett Ratner. I don't
understand this guy. He makes brilliant films
like "Red Dragon", "The Family Man" and "X-Men: The
Last Stand", then he does cheese laden horror flicks
like "Santa's Slay". What?? With computer graphic
imaging (CGI) and technology in 2007, films have
surpassed anything I have ever dreamed of in terms
of visual effects. Why then, can I tell that there is a
screen with a picture behind Chris Tucker and Jackie
Chan when they are hanging from the Eifel Tower?
Does anyone remember back in the day, fifteen,
maybe twenty years ago, when television shows
would have a car driving scene and you see all these
fake lights in the rear window and other "cars" driving
behind them? It's the same thing, but it's 2007! Hello.
So all this being said, I can say one more thing, Chris
Tucker does a hilarious Michael Jackson
impersonation for about 5 seconds in the movie. But
then the magic is over, along with the rating of this
film. I give it a generous 2.25 bald heads out of 5. And
for the concerned parents out there, this film is not
family friendly. "Rush Hour 3" is rated PG-13 for action
violence/sexual content/nudity and language.
