Robin Williams as your dad would be adventure
enough. Robin Williams taking you on a road trip
across the country; that's a vacation to remember.
In this new family comedy, one man tries to salvage
his family while keeping his job, all from behind the
wheel of a deluxe RV.
Bob Munro (Williams) is a guy trying to stay focused
on the pursuit of the American Dream. Like most, he
has lost contact with his children along the way.
When a last minute meeting causes him to have to
cancel their vacation to Hawaii, he decides to load
the family in an RV and drive to Colorado for his
business presentation. Along the way he meets some
zany campers, battles wildlife and learns some very
valuable lessons.
RV is laugh out loud funny. Thanks mainly to Robin
Williams. It's easy to forget he is a comedian when
you look at his past roles in House of D, One Hour
Photo, The Final Cut and Insomnia. Luckily, Williams
returns to his humorous roots in full force as
the "Griswold Dad" of the 2000's. The delivery and
timing that made Williams such a tremendous improv
comic can be seen throughout this film. Whether
throwing sarcastic jabs, or trying to be cool in the
eyes of his teen, Williams is lovable and laughable all
in one.
Like the family truckester in the National Lampoon
Vacation film of the
80's, RV has, well, an RV. The writers use this as an
additional character. They do things with this vehicle
that makes for very hilarious, if not over the top
moments adding an element of site gags and prop
humor. The movie brings up points and situations that
though second nature to people used to this mode of
transportation, many of us have probably never
thought about. And they make it truly funny.
Adding zaniness to the Munro excursion is Travis
Gornicke (Jeff Daniels) and his family. A down-home,
home schooling, troupe who live out of their RV;
seeing the world while helping out who they can.
The more the Munro's try and avoid the Gornickes,
the more they find they can learn a lot from them.
RV is rated PG for crude humor, innuendo and
language. There is a bit of potty humor and a few
harsh expletives but is pretty tame for the most part.
Every member of the family will find something to
laugh at in this raucous road trip. Whether you
remember family trips as a kid or have taken some
with your own children RV will remind you that the
best memories are often made in adversity, and
learning to laugh along the way. I give RV 3.5 out of
5. It is predictable, at times sophomoric, but if you
want to have some good clean laughter, this is the
trip for you. With a look at RV, I'm Matt Mungle
