Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines! The
summer blockbuster season has begun, and with it
comes some of my childhood favorites glitzed with
Hollywood digital glamour. My love of Japanese
cartoons (anime) started at a young age with a 1960s
series about a teenage boy and his racecar. Drawn
with big eyes, backgrounds in motion, and victorious
poses, Speed Racer became an iconic cartoon.
Buckle your seatbelts, because this time, you get to
ride in the Mach 5 with Speed himself.
Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is a natural racecar driver
who is driven by the memory of his brother, Rex Racer,
and loyalty to his family's small racing team. After
turning down an offer from a large and powerful
company, Speed discovers the awful truth of
corruption in the racing league. In order to save his
family's business, Speed and his girlfriend, Trixie
(Christina Ricci), team up with the mysterious Racer X
(Matthew Fox) to win the dangerous, cross-country
race that his brother never finished, known as The
Crucible.
Prepare to be blown away! This movie is all about
special effects. The man who invented Techno-color
television probably never imagined the dazzling,
glossy colors of Speed Racer. Everything is slick,
bright, and in focus. You feel like you are in the cars
racing with the drivers. The all-star cast is brilliant and
ringers for the characters they portray. Spritle and
Chim Chim stole the show for half of the movie as
their antics got them into heaps of trouble.
Speed Racer is rated PG for sequences of action,
some violence and language. This is a great movie
for the over 10 set but should come with a warning for
those sensitive to flashing lights or motion sickness.
There are no height restrictions for this wild ride, but I
did feel like I'd just been on a two hour roller coaster.
It was awesome! I give this high speed joy ride 4 out
of 5 checkered flags.
