If you've ever wanted to stick it to the man, Stick It
will have you charged up and ready to fight.
Opening in the upper-class Dallas suburb of Plano,
we're introduced to Haley (Missy Peregrym), a former
National gymnast, who gets busted by the cops for
turning a construction site into a BMX vs. skate
competition. Her crime lands her a choice: Off to
military school or the Vickerman Gymnastics
Academy, where a has been coach (Jeff Bridges)
lures in any 10 year old girl (and desperate mother)
with the hopes of Olympic Gold. She chooses military
school, but the judge sends her off to the gymnastics
academy.
Haley is instantly hated by the girls at Vickerman -
and for good reason - She walked out of the World
competition leaving her team disqualified. Instead of
donning a pink leotard and spandex shorts, she
practices in cargo shorts and t-shirts. Vickerman
convinces her to compete, and we see her "tough
girl" walls slowly falling down.
Stick It is full of teenie bopper & sports movie
clichés - but in a way that's actually appealing. The
humor is consistent throughout and by the end of the
movie, the entire audience was applauding, some
even coming out of their seats to cheer the
Vickerman team on.
Another impressive aspect of this movie was the
cinematography. Although a little too choppy in
places, overall some of the angles and composition
were more artistic than I expected. The soundtrack
used a great mix of rap, hip hop & rock to move the
movie right along.
Stick It is rated PG-13 for some crude remarks and is
anything but routine. I give it 3.5 out of 5
handsprings.
