Review by Jennifer Pflughaupt
It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's "Superman Returns",
and boy does he return in a big way! I'll just get
right to it. The film kicks off with the original opening
credits, just new names. That began the reminiscing
for anyone who at least saw the last Superman
movies with Christopher Reeve as the man in tights.
Act one blasted onto the screen with an amazing
pace. Somehow Brian Singer (director) was able to
transport me back in time to when I watched
Superman as a kid and I knew only good things were
going to happen when I saw the blue and red "S" on
Superman's chest. I felt my insides swell with
excitement the first time I saw that happen on the
big screen during "Superman Returns". Forget
telephone booths! We have a new and improved
Superman (Brandon Routh) who isn't shy. He just
runs down the street or hops in an elevator and rips
off that drabby brown leisure suit and transforms into
the kicking butt, saving the world and getting the girl
Superman!
Unfortunately, as most of you know, one cannot be a
superhero and have a relationship at the same time.
There in lies the conflict of our beloved Superman;
and that is also where a hindrance lies on the plot
and "Superman Returns" looses a lot of its steam. As
much as I love a good romance, that should not have
been the main focus of the film, but a sideline to the
verifiable dissention of good versus evil. I felt
cheated out of seeing more of the oh-so talented
Kevin Spacey who makes an impeccable Lex Luthor.
Yeah, they eventually tussle, but there isn't much
more to it than that. Maybe, if the movie weren't so
long, 2 hours and 34 minutes to be exact, I would've
felt like the scenes between the two archrivals were
sufficient and well balanced compared to the rest of
the film. I mean really, I KNOW Superman can fly. I
don't need to see him do it for half of the film. I
could have drawn you the blueprints to the city of
Metropolis by the end of the movie
But, all in all, "Superman Returns" is a good flick
despite its length, which is really my only true
complaint about the movie. I really enjoyed all the
actors and actresses in the film. I was skeptical of
the new leading man playing the hero of the movie.
But, I could not think of a more flawless Clark
Kent/Superman than Brandon Routh. He exuded the
perfect amount of geekiness as Clark, and
sophistication and charm as the superhero. Much to
my surprise, Kate Bosworth, whom I was not a fan of,
actually did an exceptional job at pulling off Lois
Lane. She deserves better roles than Rosalee Futch
in "Win a Date with Tad Hamilton". I am delighted
that Singer saw Bosworth's potential and got her for
this role.
Other supporting characters such as Parker Posey as
the ditzy Kitty Kowalski and Frank Langella as the
demanding and overbearing Perry White were a fun
addition to the storyline and gave the movie some
outrageous flare. I give "Superman Returns" 4
supersonic punches out of 5. With a look at an
afternoon delight, I'm Jennifer Pflughaupt.
