SPECIAL FEATURES

Even the Blue-ray version has little in the way of special features. The romantics who adored the story will get even more love nuggets in "An unconventional love story" in which Bana and McAdams explore the defining moments on their characters relationship. .

Okay everyone, I have a confession to make. Of all the genres of movies I watch, from gory horror to futuristic sci-fi, I have not willingly seen a "chick flick" in years. There is something about the idea of a movie that is filled with a theme of undying love and endless romance that causes me to cringe a little. I am not saying that I do not like them, after someone sitting me down and forcing me to watch Shakespeare in Love, it has become one of my personal favorites. Despite my hardened heart to romantic movies, one trailer intrigued; no grabbed me. The Time Traveler's Wife trailer had me from the first ten seconds. The idea of a chick flick being infused with a sci-fi undertone made me stop and think, "Could this movie be the one? Will I finally see that romantic movies can be a good watch?" Excitedly, I took my seat and the lights dimmed. All disbelief for the genre left when the title came up and I was ready to take a chance.

The film is about a woman named Clare, played by Rachel McAdams, who has known Henry, played by Eric Bana, since she was six. He appears in her life as she gets older, but his age remains the same. Henry has a genetic anomaly that causes him to time travel. His time traveling cannot be controlled and he comes and goes even when he doesn't want to. Clare through the years of knowing Henry falling more in love with him each time they meet. She tries to build a life with him and enjoy every moment he is with her.

The Time Traveler's Wife did not change my world. The acting by McAdams and Bana was great, but the fact that the chemistry was off until the very end of the movie made it all too hard to believe. If the actors believe it, then the audience will at least try to as well. The pace of the movie was choppy. The first forty minutes of the film were happy and positive, and then it takes a turn down "Debbie Downer" lane and decides to park there until the credits roll. Even with a film about Time travel and living life in jumps, it does not give it enough of an excuse to leave the audience wondering "what just happened?" Finally, the storyline felt over the top with the sappiness of it. With a premise like this it is certainly easy to go overboard with the emotions and romance, but this film did not even stop to think about how much sap was too much. This caused an even greater detachment from the film because it just got too hard to believe.

The movie is rated PG-13 for thematic elements, brief disturbing images, nudity and sexuality. The nudity in the film 99% of the time is just Bana's rear end. When he time travels... his clothes don't. The sexuality of the film is tame and for the majority of the time, is based in a marriage. I would recommend this film for any woman who wants a girl's night and a good cry. It is certainly not a romantic comedy, despite its humorous moments.

I give The Time Traveler's Wife two out of five wedding rings. Despite the lack of plot backbone, the actors carried the film as best as they could. Did it change my opinion on chick flicks? Nope. I am still waiting for that film to come.
